Our Farm
Here at Sol Mariculture, we believe in regenerative farming, meaning actively improving the local ecosystem's health throughout our farming process. The process we use is called Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture, or IMTA for short. IMTA involves farming multiple species together, using nutrients and waste byproducts from one species to benefit the others. This recycling of nutrients fosters a healthy ecosystem while producing premium seafood.
What does this look like exactly at our farm? It all starts with our oysters, which feed on phytoplankton found abundantly in the coastal bays of Maine and ultimately create waste by breathing, eating, and digesting. Our seaweed then absorbs this waste, becoming protein-rich while providing benefits to our oysters by absorbing carbon dioxide and reducing the effects of ocean acidification, which allows the oyster to grow faster and heartier. Our fortified seaweed is then fed to our sea urchins, bolstering growth and producing premium-grade Uni.
